Dalhousie Church - Day 7

Today was a bitter sweet day being the final day of our trip before heading home tomorrow. We started off the day with a devotion led by Max, Jax, and Tony about how we are not too young to preach the Word of God to people who need it, and we are not too young to help other Christian churches or camps grow. After that went back to camp John 3:16 and put on an our program for the weekend day campers. We put as much energy into our last program as possible. At the camp, we met some really sweet kids and formed some amazing connections. This part was kind of bittersweet because we were excited to be with the kids doing the program, but we were sad that it would be the last one. As well, a few of us even got to hold a baby that could kiss and hug on demand. It is really fun being able to serve at the camp because it feels like another version of Camp Evergreen (our Church’s summer camp), so we all felt very at home serving in this setting. After our program, we handed out lunch to those who attended. This was cool because we could see how we are helping these people, and we also got to see how the work we did two days prior helped the camp.

Later that afternoon, we had an insightful debrief that covered what to expect when we returned home, how to keep the fire burning bright and growing, how to continue the mission, and an overall look back on the week and the growth we’ve experienced and the ways we’ve seen God work. At home it may feel like there is nothing we can do to help, so we went on a missions trip, but a missions trip just is a scheduled time to share the gospel. There are always things that you can do to share the word of God and help people, you just have to have the boldness/courage to do it. Therefore, we talked about how we can continue the work we started here and help people come to Christ. One of the best parts of this debrief was hearing what everyone was learning through this missions trip. While we all did the same work everyone came out with a different God moment, and attitude change through our service.

This was followed by an exciting last night out to get more of a taste for the unique and amazing culture in this beautiful city. While in Centro (downtown Merida) we had the opportunity to visit some shops, and we saw a show about Mayan culture which was a lot different than what we are used to in Calgary. The show portrayed them praying to their gods and playing a cultural sport game. This was really sad to see because they don’t know the Lord. In Mayan culture, they worship idols and gods, which makes our work down here that much more important to help preach the Word to the locals so that they can have a relationship with the Lord. Tomorrow we begin our long journey home!
